Nellie's Family Tree
For much of her life, Eleanor Hamilton was happy. That wasn't to say that life didn't have its challenges-- she was the youngest and the only girl born to parents that were rather hopeful that she'd one day marry up and catapult the Hamiltons into ultimate comfort. They didn't truly understand the bright young girl they had created who wanted far more than to simply be comfortable. Nellie wanted to see the world, to learn and create, and dreamed of the day that her wishes would come true.Of course, had she known that her faraway daydreams would actually come true for the unfair price of losing her mother, perhaps she wouldn't have wanted it quite as much.
Nevertheless, her fate was sealed. George returned to America in the hopes of settling back down in the comfort of his wealthy family and would send for his children once they'd all finished University. Nell wasn't above taking advantage of a horrible situation: she was left in England with her elder brother James, and he wanted her to be happy, so with many a letter written on her behalf and a sizeable donation to her university of choice, she was off.
To be able to study exactly what she wanted was beyond comprehension. Immersed in languages and history, her years there flew by and before she knew it, it was all aboard something magnificent. The Ship of Dreams, they called it, an Unsinkable Ship that would take her to America for the first time, to be reunited with her father.
Though everyone knows how that story goes. The Titanic, it turned out, was not unsinkable, hit an iceberg and 1500 souls were lost in the frigid waters of the Atlantic.
Nellie, she would find out in a moment full of confusion, relief and abject horror, was not meant to be one of those souls.
Instead, she had unintentionally been thrust into the middle of a situation with what she was informed was a Time Bandit-- a man who was determined to change the course of history by being on board the ill-fated ship. To save over a thousand people! Through the confusion of being told far too much about the future and the ship hitting the iceberg anyway, Nellie was offered a choice: to be eliminated from the timeline as she now knew far too much, or.....essentially be eliminated from the timeline by drowning in the Atlantic because there was no way she could live.
To the late 2010s she went. Assimilation was no easy task for the newly dubbed time orphan-- she had lived a life she rather liked and was unused to the brightness and technology that was everywhere. Electricity on a ship was one thing, but hearing that a giant tube had gone to the moon more than fifty years ago? Utter lunacy. Eventually, inevitably, she integrated to her new time, her new life. The promise of furthering her education certainly helped, and it eventually led her back to TEA to work as a Preservationist, where she's been for the past four years.
Notes/Trivia
- a very talented cook, and has a tendency to fill the fridge for her housemates to enjoy the fruits (and vegetables, and proteins) of her labors.
- fond of antiquing.
- lives for a crispy Coke.
- bad habit of box dyeing her hair dark and then paying someone to take her back to blonde so she doesn't fry her hair off.
- she, justifiably, avoids boats.
